I remain involved as Chair of the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board. It subsequently moved its manufacturing base to Tianjin, where, re-branded as Scottech and following hospital trials, it produces wireless consumer diagnostic devices, approved by CMNPA for use in home diagnosis in China as Me-assure. The company manufactured and sold devices through Amazon and Boots before being acquired. In one example, in bowel cancer diagnosis, I am is the academic founder of Mode-dx, a biosensor company, measuring faecal occult blood as a proxy for bowel disease. The societal and economic impact of my work is illustrated through examples around medical diagnostics and devices, with impact arising through innovations leading to successful spin-outs, employing local graduates. I was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK’s National Academy of Engineering) as well as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (Scotland’s National Academy of Arts, Humanities and Sciences). I sit on the Chinese Academy of Sciences Innovation Cooperation Centre International Advisory Board and hold Visiting Professorships at OSCAR, Suzhou China ( ), and The School of Medical Science and Technology, IIT Kharagpur, India ( ). I am an External Examiner for the MRes in Medical Device Design and Entrepreneurship, Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College as well as being Chair of the International Advisory Panel for the Biomedical Engineering Bachelor Program at Hong Kong University. I was Head of the Division of Biomedical Engineering (2011-2014) and also part of the University’s Senior Management Group as a Vice Principal (2014-2020), developing internal, regional and national innovation strategies. Previously, I have held a range of strategic posts within the University of Glasgow, concerned with internationalization (as the Dean of Transnational Education, 2012-2014) and post graduate education (as Dean of Graduate Studies, 2009-2013).
I was also a Member of EPSRC Strategic Advisory Team in Healthcare Technologies (2016-2021), and am currently a Member of EPSRC Strategic Advisory Network, which provides the EPSRC Executive with advice and guidance on policy development at a cross-cutting level and makes appropriate recommendations to its Governing Council. ORCID: ĭuring my career, I have contributed to both national and international positions of trust, including the Research Assessment Exercise, RAE 2008, Sub-Panel 24 (Electrical Engineering) the Research Excellence Framework, REF 2014, Sub-Panel 15 (General Engineering) and as Deputy Chair in REF 2021, Sub-Panel 12 (Engineering). I have published over 280 papers in peer-reviewed journals with an H index 57 (cited over 10,000 times in ISI Researcher ID, E-9000-2010, with average numbers of citations per article ~32).
My multidisciplinary research seeks to address major healthcare challenges with a particular focus on medical imaging, medical diagnostics and medical devices. I have also worked extensively in Eastern Africa on infectious diseases diagnostics in rural communities in Uganda and Tanzania. I hold The Wolfson Chair of Bioengineering at the University of Glasgow.
